🌿 Santa Barbara Cemetery
Perched peacefully above the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Barbara Cemetery is surprisingly one of the most beautiful places in the city. The grounds are immaculately maintained, and sweeping ocean views create a serene, reflective environment. Many notable figures—including actors, musicians, and historical personalities—have their final resting place here, making it both a tranquil visit and a glimpse into Santa Barbara’s layered past.
This isn’t just a cemetery—it’s a quiet pause from busy tourist areas and a way to feel grounded in Santa Barbara’s history.
We made a point of visiting to pay our respects to the Hollywood actress Virginia Cherrill, who played a notable role in our family’s history. You can watch our visit to Santa Barbara Cemetery on YouTube here.

🏞️ Inspiration Point Hiking Trail
If you’re searching for breathtaking views without needing to commit to an all-day trek, the Inspiration Point Trail is a perfect fit. This hike generally takes around 1.5 hours round-trip, offering a fantastic reward for a relatively moderate effort. Along the route, you’ll pass through oak and sycamore shaded paths before eventually reaching panoramic views overlooking Santa Barbara, the Pacific Ocean, and the Channel Islands on clear days.
We experienced a hike on this trail during the Covid era. That was a unique time to see people in the great outdoors, separated from one another, all wearing face masks. You can watch our hike to Inspiration Point on YouTube here.
Looking for a little extra adventure? From the same trailhead, you can also reach Seven Falls, another local favorite.
Prepare for your hike with these essential items:

🌸 Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
Step into 78 acres of California beauty at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, where over 1,000 native plant species thrive among meadows, redwood groves, desert landscapes, and peaceful walking trails. It’s educational, rejuvenating, and absolutely magical in springtime bloom.

🏰 El Presidio de Santa Barbara
This historic site tells the story of early California as few others can. Built in 1782, El Presidio de Santa Barbara was the last of four Spanish military outposts constructed in Alta California. Today, the preserved and reconstructed structures offer a fascinating look into Spanish colonial life, military presence, and the city’s earliest foundations.
We love diving into the early California history at El Presidio and have visited this site on numerous visits to Santa Barbara
Walk through Adobe walls, chapels, gardens, and barracks—and imagine the world that existed here long before highways and surfboards.

🕰️ Santa Barbara Historical Museum
If you love history, this museum is a treasure chest. The Santa Barbara Historical Museum highlights the region’s long and diverse heritage—including Chumash, Spanish, Mexican, Yankee, and Chinese influences. Artifacts, textiles, furnishings, and photographs dating back to the 15th century bring the past vividly to life.
It’s a wonderful way to fully appreciate how many cultures helped shape the Santa Barbara we know today.

🎨 Santa Barbara Museum of Art
Although smaller than major metropolitan art museums, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art houses world-class collections. Founded in 1941, the museum houses works spanning 4,000 years, including Asian, American, and European art, from classical to contemporary. Rotating exhibitions ensure you’ll likely encounter something new each visit.
We recommend finding a guided tour at the museum as these help to understand the stories behind the amazing works of art.
For art lovers, this is one of the most enriching stops in town.
