Our First Airstream Anniversary – A Year of Adventures, Lessons & Surprises

Happy anniversary to us! It’s been exactly one year since we brought home our Airstream, a beautiful 2014 27-foot International Signature model we affectionately named Tŷ Arian, which means “Silver House” in Welsh. This name is a nod to Julie’s strong Welsh family roots and the iconic silver shell of our new home on wheels.

That first year flew by, filled with new experiences, unexpected lessons, and countless memories. We recently sat down to reflect on this journey in a special Airstream anniversary episode of our podcast, The Places Where We Go. Now, we’re excited to share those reflections with you here, offering a deeper look at what our first anniversary of Airstream life was really like.

Airstream Maiden Voyage

Taking the Plunge into RV Life

In early 2020, our travel plans, like everyone else’s, were completely upended. We had originally planned a big trip to Europe, but as borders closed, we needed a Plan B. The idea of an RV had been simmering on the back burner for a while, but the circumstances of that year brought it to the forefront. It offered a way to continue exploring safely, giving us control over our environment while still satisfying our wanderlust.

Our search led us to A to Z Motors in Winters, California, where we had a fantastic buying experience. We found our perfect match in Tŷ Arian. It was a significant investment and a leap into a completely different style of travel for us, but the dream of hitting the open road in our own silver house was too compelling to ignore. We were officially RV owners, ready to embark on a new chapter of adventures.

The Reality vs. The Expectation

Before buying the Airstream, we, like many, had a romanticized vision of RV life. We pictured serene mornings with coffee overlooking a misty lake, spontaneous detours to hidden gems, and cozy evenings under a blanket of stars. While we certainly had many of those picture-perfect moments, the reality of Airstream ownership also came with a steep learning curve and a healthy dose of practical challenges.

What Met Our Expectations

The freedom and flexibility we hoped for were absolutely real. Having our own space, complete with our own kitchen and bathroom, was a game-changer. We could travel with our own pillows, cook our favorite meals, and have a consistent, comfortable home base no matter where we parked. This was particularly reassuring during a time when health and safety were top priorities.

The sense of community was another wonderful surprise. We’d heard about the friendly Airstream community, but experiencing it firsthand was something else. Whether it was a shared tip at a dump station or a friendly wave from a fellow “silver bullet” owner on the highway, there was an instant camaraderie that made us feel part of something special.

What Surprised Us

The biggest surprise was just how much there was to learn. It wasn’t just about driving and parking. We had to become amateur plumbers, electricians, and mechanics overnight. We learned about battery management, black- and gray-water tanks, leveling the trailer, and the intricate dance of hitching and unhitching. Every trip was a lesson, and sometimes those lessons were learned the hard way.

We also underestimated the mental load of planning RV trips. It’s not as simple as booking a flight and a hotel. We had to meticulously plan our routes, ensuring the roads were suitable for a 27-foot trailer. We had to book campsites months in advance, especially at popular national parks. And, we quickly learned that spontaneity in the RV world often requires a lot of prior planning.

Key Lessons from Our First Year

Our first year with Tŷ Arian was an education. We made mistakes, had frustrating moments, and learned more than we ever thought possible. Here are some of the biggest takeaways from our rookie year on the road.

Lesson 1: Patience is Everything

From navigating tight gas stations to backing into a tricky campsite in the dark, RVing tests your patience. We learned to slow down, communicate clearly (sometimes with hand signals that probably looked ridiculous to onlookers), and accept that things will sometimes go wrong. A flat tire, a leaky faucet, or a finicky power hookup is all part of the experience. The key is to take a deep breath, troubleshoot the problem, and remember that it’s all part of the adventure.

Lesson 2: The Importance of a Checklist

Initially, we often forgot something on almost every trip. Once, it was a crucial power cord adapter. Another time, it was our favorite coffee mugs. We quickly created detailed checklists for everything: a pre-departure checklist to make sure the Airstream was secure for travel, a setup checklist for when we arrived at a campsite, and a packing checklist to ensure we had all our essentials. These lists became our lifeline, saving us from countless headaches.

Lesson 3: Embrace the RV Community

The Airstream community is an incredible resource. Online forums, Facebook groups, and fellow campers at parks are treasure troves of information. We learned some of our best tips and tricks from other owners. Someone taught us a better way to organize our storage, another recommended a must-have gadget, and many shared their favorite off-the-beaten-path destinations. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or strike up a conversation; the willingness to share knowledge is one of the most valuable aspects of this lifestyle.

Lesson 4: It’s Not Just Camping, It’s a Lifestyle

We quickly realized that owning an Airstream was more than just a way to take vacations. It became a hobby and a way of life. There’s always something to maintain, upgrade, or clean. We spent weekends tinkering with small projects, researching new gear, and planning future trips. It’s an ongoing commitment, but one that we’ve found incredibly rewarding. It has brought us closer as a couple and allowed us to see the country in a way we never could have otherwise.

Looking Back at Our Favorite Destinations

Our Airstream has taken us to some incredible places. From the rugged coastlines of the Pacific Northwest to the deserts of the Southwest, each trip has left its own unique mark on us.

Our travels took us through several states, allowing us to explore national parks, state parks, and charming small towns. We discovered the joy of staying in different types of campgrounds, from full-service RV resorts with all the amenities to serene, rustic sites with nothing but nature for company.

One of our most memorable trips was exploring Utah’s national parks. Waking up to the sunrise over Zion’s majestic cliffs and stargazing in the clear desert sky outside of Arches National Park were moments of pure magic. Having our Airstream as a comfortable base to return to after a long day of hiking made the experience even more special. We could cook a hearty meal, take a hot shower, and relax in our own space, all while being immersed in some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth.

What’s Next for The Places Where We Go?

As we look ahead to our second year with Tŷ Arian, our excitement is as strong as ever. Our first year was about learning the ropes, but now we feel more confident and ready to tackle even bigger adventures.

We have a long list of places we want to visit. We’re dreaming of a cross-country trip, exploring the historic sites of the East Coast, and maybe even venturing up into Canada. We’re also looking forward to more local getaways, discovering the hidden gems closer to our home in Simi Valley. The beauty of the Airstream is that it makes both grand expeditions and weekend escapes possible.

We’re also eager to continue sharing our journey with you as we move past our first Airstream anniversary. We’ll be documenting our travels, sharing more tips and tricks we learn along the way, and hopefully inspiring some of you to consider your own RV adventures.

Is Airstream Life for You?

Our first Airstream anniversary has given us a chance to pause and reflect on this incredible journey. Has it been perfect? No. Has it been challenging? Absolutely. But has it been worth it? A thousand times, yes.

The Airstream has fundamentally changed the way we travel. It has taught us to be more self-reliant, more patient, and more appreciative of the simple joys of the open road. It has given us the freedom to explore at our own pace and has created a lifetime of memories in just one short year.

If you’re considering diving into the world of RVing, our advice is to conduct thorough research, consult with other owners, and be realistic about the learning curve. But most importantly, if you have that spark of adventure, go for it. The places you’ll go and the experiences you’ll have are truly priceless.

Thank you for following along with our journey so far and for reading our post about our first-year Airstream anniversary. We can’t wait to see where the road takes us next, and we hope you’ll continue to join us at the places where we go.
