Quick Verdict: Are KUHL Freeflex Roll-Up Pants Worth It?

Yes — the KUHL Freeflex Roll-Up Pants are a strong choice for women who want one pair of pants that can handle hiking, sightseeing, road trips, flights, casual dinners, and warm-weather travel. They are best for travelers who prioritize comfort, stretch, quick-drying fabric, pockets, and versatility. They may not be the best choice for women who prefer a high-rise fit or need rugged backpacking pants for heavy abrasion.

Who Should Buy KUHL These Pants?

Best for:
Travelers who pack light, women who want hiking pants that don’t look overly technical, road trippers, RV travelers, casual hikers, National Park visitors, and women who want one pant for trail-to-town use.

Who Should Skip These Pants?

Not ideal for:
Women who strongly prefer high-rise pants, travelers who want deep phone pockets for larger phones, or backpackers needing maximum abrasion resistance for rough off-trail use.

From the customer reviews I explored, a number of customers repeatedly mention fit, rise, durability, breathability, quick-drying, and pocket size as decision factors. As an example, REI reviews include both strong praise and concerns about low rise, pocket/phone fit, roll-up snaps, breathability, and durability under heavier use.

What I Look For In Hiking and Travel Pants

When I shop for multi-purpose pants I can use on the trail or day trip exploring, I prefer comfortable, form-fitting pants that allow ample movement. Adjustability is always welcome – especially the option to shorten the pants.  And lastly, lots of pockets are high on our list. So I was interested to review these women’s roll-up hiking pants from Kuhl.

Sizing Notes From My Experience

I ordered a size 10 in Rainstorm. Based on my experience, the fit was true to size. The pants worked especially well for a variety of activities, including hiking and travel days. The rise felt comfortable.

Worn on: Local Southern California hikes, road trips, RV travel experiences, National Park visits, and as a travel day pant in Europe.

Weather tested: I’ve worn it mostly in the weather conditions I experience in Southern California as well as western National Parks. The temperature range I’ve worn the pants in has typically been between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the upper 90s, encompassing hot days, cool mornings, light mist, and windy desert conditions.

Comfort test: Long hikes, long car rides, long walks, and trail use.

Comfort and Mobility

These pants are super comfortable and great for hiking or city exploring. KUHL FreeFlex pants feature an ultra-lightweight, mechanically stretch-engineered design that doesn’t lose its fit. They have a mid-rise in the front and taper into a high-rise in the back.  They are luxuriously soft, and they feel like wearing pajamas all day.

Numerous pockets are very convenient.  The cargo pockets make it easy to fit your cell phone.

The pants’ roll-up feature lets you cool down on a hot day.

Dirt brushes off easily.

Venting and Breathability

The fabric is lightweight yet not thin. During the current winter weather in California, the pants are comfortable and breathable. In periods of warmer weather, the pants are designed to let heat and sweat escape.

Fabric composition is 50% Polyester, 50% New Polyester in the KUHL Freeflex pants.

Adaptability

When I travel, I often pack a limited amount of clothing. For example, I toured the UK for three weeks with only our backpacks. That makes it important for the clothes I pack to be versatile.

Add some color on top with shirts, jackets, and accessories, and these pants can be easily dressed up for a night out in a restaurant or even a Sunday visit to church.  The roll-up feature easily converts the pants to beach, lake, or river attire. It’s the next best thing to wearing shorts.  For versatility that covers everything from hiking trails to museum strolls, these pants are perfect for a variety of travel situations.

When traveling with a modest luggage situation – or even a single backpack, I appreciate pants like this, which I can roll up in packing cubes. Even after unrolling, I don’t experience crinkles or wrinkles – so they are excellent for travel.

The fabric has a quality feel and looks sharper than rugged hiking-only pants. With a combination of comfort, quality design, and fit, the KUHL Freeflex roll-up pants can be part of an effective travel ensemble.

Sun Protection and Weather Resistance

You can feel confident wearing these pants in the sun.  The sun-protective fabric provides UPF 50+ protection against harmful UV rays.

Water resistance is another quality feature of these pants. They are good performers in light rain and misty conditions thanks to the C6 durable water-repellent coating.

Dry Time

These pants offer a quick-dry design.  I appreciate this when traveling, as on extended travels, I’ll give pants like this a wash in the hotel sink during the evening and appreciate that they are dry by the morning.

KUHL offers a range of 11 colors for the KUHL Freeflex Roll-Up Pants.  Color options include:

  • Eucalyptus
  • Olive Camo
  • Rainstorm
