Solvang is a great place where you can stroll through a small village with old-world European architecture, indulge in authentic Danish pastries, and take in the cultural heritage of this charming town.  A place that looks and smells a little bit like Christmas year-round, it’s a perfect weekend getaway town.

Visiting Solvang village is like stepping into Denmark without leaving California. Walk around the small town, and you’ll see Danish architecture, thatched roofs, and windmills. But the California version of a Danish village comes with some of the best California wines, boutique shops, and a vibrant nightlife. This extremely walkable town is a great California weekend getaway place.

Solvang is a town we’ve visited many times. We think it’s one of the best places you can visit in California’s Central Coast.

Getting to Solvang

Solvang village is located in Santa Barbara county. Off the tranquil 101 freeway, the exit for CA-246 at Buellton takes you eastward into the village.

Solvang is 35 miles north of Santa Barbara and 125 miles north of Los Angeles on the 101 (Ventura) Freeway.

Train connections are available via Amtrak daily on the Amtrak Thruway Motor Coach to downtown Solvang from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Carpinteria, California. Train passengers can use their tickets for additional discounts throughout Solvang.

Solvang California is a fantastic food town that takes it up a notch during Julefest.  You’ll find over sixty eateries, from traditional Danish fare to Belgian, Mexican, burgers, and farm-to-table offerings in town.  And there’s plenty of coffee, wine, and beer to quench your thirst.

Here are a few notable places to add to your foodie exploration in Solvang:

Brekkies – This is our new favorite breakfast stop in town.  They serve an all-day breakfast, including waffles.

Cafe Dolce – If you need a jolt of coffee, check out Cafe Dolce for an array of coffee based beverages and sweet treats

Coast Range & Vaquero Bar – This restaurant serves steak, seafood, pasta dishes, and more. Stroll over to the bar after dinner, where you can listen to records while sipping your nightcap.

Good Seed Coffee Boutique – A nicely decorated place to get your morning espresso or cold brew. The organic bakery has eight types of sourdough bread loaves and other treats.

Mad & Vin – The Landsby’s signature restaurant specializes in delicious wine-country-inspired cuisine. Dishes are made with fresh, seasonal ingredients from California’s central coast. It’s #2 on TripAdvisor for restaurants in Solvang.

Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery – You’ll find tasty baked desserts and pastries here and meat pies.

Paula’s Pancake House – The #1 restaurant in town per TripAdvisor reviewers. Stop here for the Danish pancakes to round out a traditional eating experience in town.

Peasants FEAST – Features seasonal, made-from-scratch food. The menu includes instagramable sandwiches, tantalizing tacos, and a not-to-be-missed frozen lime pie.

Solvang Bakery – Visit the Solvang Bakery for the best in Danish baked goods. They’ve been serving them here since 1981.  You’ll not only find traditional desserts, but you can also find fantastic gingerbread houses here too.  The wonderful aromas of holiday spices are hard to resists.  You can also pick up a Gingerbread House Decorating Kit to take home.

Solvang Restaurant – A trip to Solvang isn’t complete without trying the traditional Danish Aebleskiver. This treat goes well with or after your pancakes and sausages.

Wine and Cheese Tasting in Solvang

Solvang is renowned for its wine and cheese tasting opportunities. With nearby picturesque vineyards and cozy wine tasting rooms, Solvang offers a delightful experience for both wine enthusiasts and cheese connoisseurs alike.
