There are several places to visit in Camp Verde, which are part of the National Park system. A must-see spot is Montezuma Castle National Monument. This site is one of the first National Monuments declared by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Start your visit in the Visitors Center to purchase your entrance ticket or show your National Park annual pass. In the small museum, you can read about the Indian history of the Sinagua people. Numerous displays highlight aspects of the daily life of these ancient inhabitants. A small gift shop offers a variety of souvenirs to remember your visit.
A short 1/3 mile trail takes visitors along an ancient cliffside where Sinagua Indians built amazing housing right into the cliff—the structure here dates to around 700 A.D.
Once upon a time, visitors were permitted to enter the dwelling itself. Today, given the fragile nature of this abode on the limestone cliff, direct entrance is no longer allowed.
The interesting point is that Montezuma, the Aztec Emperor, never visited this area and has no direct connection to the monument that bears his name. European Americans who found the cliffside dwelling erroneously assumed Montezuma directed the building of this castle on the cliff, but that is not the case.

2. Visit Montezuma Well
If you visit Montezuma Castle National Monument, you can see a neighboring site just twenty minutes away – the Montezuma Well.
This ancient well is more like a small lake. As you take the trail to the rim from the parking lot, one of the first sites you’ll notice has more ancient dwellings reminiscent of the type at Montezuma Castle.
Amazingly, about 1.4 million gallons of water flow in and out of this sinkhole daily. The well is 368 feet wide and 55 feet deep. We learned from a park ranger that the water has dangerously high levels of arsenic, so it isn’t fit for consumption. The water has been used for irrigation for centuries, and an old Sinagua Canal is still used today.
A walk along the rim of the well provides many photo opportunities and gives a glimpse of ancient dwellings.
The well is home to several species that only live here. These include amphipod, a diatom (algae), a leech species, the springtail, and a water scorpion.

3. Drive to Clarkdale to visit Tuzigoot National Monument
Our following location isn’t in Camp Verde, but just a 36-minute drive north is nearly essential if you’re making the trips to Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well.
Tuzigoot National Monument is a treasure dating back to the 12th century. This Verde Valley location was home to around 250 people who lived in dwellings on a sandstone ridge.
Start at the visitor center to immerse yourself in the history of the ancient inhabitants. Outside, a short trail takes you past the ruins of the Native American dwellings. The must-see place here is a preserved pueblo, where you can climb a ladder onto the rooftop.
From the top, you’ll see magnificent views of the valley and a beautiful 360-degree panorama.

4. Walk through history at Fort Verde State Historic Park
Fort Verde State Historic Park is perhaps the best-preserved fort of the Central Arizona Indian Wars period. Visit a multi-building museum complex on the site of Fort Verde and learn how army residents lived in the late 1800s. This is perhaps the best place to learn about the history of Camp Verde and the Verde Valley.
The main museum holds artifacts from the period. Interpretive exhibits detail the history of the American Indian Wars and include artifacts from military life. We enjoyed walking through the homes that were residences for army personnel, their families, and the medical staff. The historic house museums are listed on the National and State Register of Historic Places.
During the American Indian Wars of the late 19th century, the US Army had forts in the Verde Valley.
The Fort Verde State Park is open daily. A visitor fee is paid at the visitor center. You enter the main museum and continue touring the grounds, which include multiple historic buildings. The park includes a picnic area and restrooms.
