The History and Legacy of West Somerset Railway

The historic railway was initially constructed as a broad-gauge railway line in the mid-1800s and was later converted to standard gauge. The railway line was vital in transporting goods and people across Somerset, bringing prosperity to the region. In 1921, the West Somerset Railway Company was amalgamated into the Great Western Railway (GWR), though the Minehead branch continued to be operated by the enlarged GWR. Ultimately, with the advent of road transport and declining passenger numbers, the railway line was shut down in the 1970s.

In the 1990s, the West Somerset Railway Association started a mammoth task of restoring the lost railway line, including overhauling vintage steam engines, revamping the dilapidated stations, and rebuilding the track.

Today, the West Somerset Railway embodies how passion and perseverance can revive a lost legacy.

The slow relaxing train took us mainly along the sea coast, coastal farmlands, and pastures. We saw new vistas of Somerset, passing through eight small towns on the way to Bishops Lydeard. One could make a mini excursion from the towns on this route, hopping on and off if the ticket allows such ad hoc exploration.

During the train ride, you can enjoy the offerings of a buffet car. On board, you can enjoy cream tea while enjoying the magnificent countryside views. Train staff are friendly and helpful.

From the end of the route at Bishops Lydeard, you can get to Taunton rail station in about 20 minutes. Taunton is where you’d likely visit if you want to venture to Bath, as we did during one of our UK visits.
