We were looking for something memorable in the Southern California desert, and this hike delivered. South Fork Palm Wash Slot Canyon Trail gave us our first slot canyon hiking experience in California, complete with narrow rock walls, desert silence, afternoon shadows, and just enough adventure to make the hike feel special. Earlier in the day, we experienced the Borrego Palm Canyon Trail hike
and were looking to a slot canyon in the afternoon.
Before reaching the trail, we also made time for one of Borrego Springs’ most whimsical attractions: the giant metal sculptures of Galleta Meadows. Between a massive desert dragon, prehistoric creatures, and a dramatic slot canyon hike, this Anza-Borrego outing became one of our favorite desert experiences.

Our Experience Getting to the Trail
After speaking with a park ranger, we set our navigation and headed toward South Fork Palm Wash Canyon Trail. Along the way, we passed through a landscape that felt wide open, remote, and distinctly desert.
We also noticed many people boondocking around Ocotillo Wells, which appears to be a popular area for desert camping and off-road adventures. If you enjoy dry camping or desert recreation, this region may be worth researching separately.

When we reached the dirt access road for the hike, we had a decision to make: drive farther in or park and walk.
We were in a truck, and it looked like we probably could have made it part of the way. But the initial descent onto the dirt road gave us pause. Since we were not completely sure about the conditions ahead, we chose the safer option and parked near the main road.
That decision added extra walking to our outing, but it also removed the stress of wondering whether the vehicle would have trouble getting back out. Once we walked the road, we realized that much of it was manageable, but the beginning section could be the trickiest part depending on your vehicle and comfort level.
Hiking Into the Slot Canyon
Once we reached the point where vehicles could no longer continue, the real hiking experience began.
The landscape soon narrowed, and we entered the slot canyon section of South Fork Palm Wash. This is where the hike became special. The walls rose around us, the light softened, and the desert took on a completely different personality.
At times, the passage felt tight. There were places where we had to pay attention to our footing and move carefully through the canyon. The rock walls had beautiful textures, curves, and shadows, and the entire area felt quiet and almost hidden from the rest of the park.
One of the best parts of this hike is looking up. The canyon walls create natural frames of sky above you, and the contrast between shadowed rock and bright desert light makes the hike especially photogenic.
