Santa Barbara County is one of our favorite areas for RV camping in California because it offers so many different kinds of trips within a single region. You can camp near the beach, relax by a lake, stay close to wine country, explore Solvang, or use your RV as a base camp for visiting downtown Santa Barbara.
We travel with a 30-foot Airstream, so site size matters to us. A campground may say it accommodates RVs, but that does not always mean every campsite will be comfortable for a 30-foot trailer. When we look for places to stay, we pay close attention to the campground layout, site length, hookups, maneuverability, and how the campground fits the kind of trip we want to take.

Lake Cachuma Recreation Area is one of our favorite inland RV camping options in Santa Barbara County. Located in the Santa Ynez Valley, it offers a relaxed campground setting with lake views, rolling hills, oak trees, and easy access to nearby towns such as Solvang, Santa Ynez, and Los Olivos.
For RV travelers, Lake Cachuma is a practical choice because it offers many RV camping options, including full-hookup and partial-hookup sites. For our 30-foot Airstream, Lake Cachuma has felt like one of the more comfortable campground options in the county, especially compared with tighter private RV parks.
The setting is one of the biggest reasons to stay here. You won’t be camping directly on the beach, but you will enjoy a scenic Central Coast landscape with lake views and a slower pace. It’s a nice place for a relaxed getaway, a wine-country weekend, a visit to Solvang, or a family camping trip.
One important thing to know is that Lake Cachuma is a reservoir, so it is not primarily a swimming destination. Think of it more as a scenic recreation area for camping, boating, fishing, wildlife watching, and enjoying time outdoors.

Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground
Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground in Buellton offers a very different kind of RV experience. This is more of a resort-style campground than a rustic camping destination.
The biggest advantages of Flying Flags are its amenities and location. It is close to Solvang, Buellton, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, and the surrounding wine country. The resort has a polished feel, with amenities such as pools, a store, common areas, and family-friendly features.
Flying Flags can also work well for group trips because not everyone needs to arrive in an RV. The property offers a mix of RV sites and other lodging options, making it useful for families or friends traveling together.
Our honest note about Flying Flags is that some of the sites can feel tight. With a 30-foot Airstream, we would be careful about the type of site we choose. If we were returning, we would strongly consider a premium or larger site for more space and easier maneuvering.
Flying Flags is not necessarily the campground we would choose for solitude or a rustic nature experience. But if you want amenities, comfort, and a convenient location near Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley, it can be a great option.

Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara
Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara, previously known as Ocean Mesa, is a strong choice if you want a coastal Santa Barbara County campground with more comfort than a state beach campground.
This campground is located along the Gaviota Coast area, near El Capitán State Beach and El Capitán Canyon. It offers a coastal foothill setting with access to nearby beaches, trails, and Santa Barbara-area attractions.
What we like about Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara is that it gives you a nice balance. You get a coastal setting, plus full hookups and resort-style amenities. For RV travelers who want comfort while staying near the coast, this campground can work well.
It is also a useful base for visiting Goleta, Santa Barbara, Refugio State Beach, El Capitán State Beach, and the Gaviota Coast. You are not right in downtown Santa Barbara, but you are close enough to explore the area by car.
The tradeoff is cost. Sun Outdoors Santa Barbara is likely to be more expensive than public campground options, especially during popular travel periods. But for many RVers, the hookups, amenities, and location may be worth the price.

Santa Barbara Sunrise RV Park
Santa Barbara Sunrise RV Park is one of the most convenient RV options for exploring the city of Santa Barbara.
This is not a large scenic campground or a resort-style RV park. It is a small urban RV park, and that is exactly why some travelers will find it useful. If your plans include downtown Santa Barbara, Stearns Wharf, the Funk Zone, the waterfront, restaurants, museums, Mission Santa Barbara, or the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, the location is the main advantage.
For us, Santa Barbara Sunrise RV Park worked as a practical base camp. It gave us a place to stay with our Airstream while keeping us close to the city.
That said, expectations matter. If you want wide-open campsites, trees, trails, and a classic camping feel, this may not be your first choice. But if you want to visit Santa Barbara with your RV and avoid staying in a hotel, it can make a lot of sense.

El Capitán State Beach
El Capitán State Beach offers one of the most scenic coastal camping experiences in Santa Barbara County. This is the kind of place that feels more like classic California beach camping: coastal bluffs, trees, trails, beach access, and ocean air.
We enjoyed El Capitán for its natural setting. It feels more rustic and outdoorsy than a private RV resort, and the beach access is a major highlight.
For RVers, there are some important things to know. El Capitán State Beach is dry camping, so there are no hookups. That means you need to be comfortable managing your battery power, water, tanks, and generator usage if applicable. For a 30-foot Airstream, site selection is also important because individual campsite dimensions and access can vary.
Another important note is that El Capitán has undergone closures and improvements. Before planning a stay, check the current status through official California State Parks or ReserveCalifornia sources.
The ants can be plentiful here. We recommend bringing Borax to sprinkle around your tires.
When it is available, El Capitán State Beach is a beautiful option for RVers who prioritize scenery and beach access over hookups and resort amenities.

Jalama Beach County Park
Jalama Beach County Park is one of the most talked-about beach camping destinations in Santa Barbara County. We have not personally stayed there yet, but friends of ours have, and it has a strong reputation among California coastal campers.
Jalama Beach is more remote than the other campgrounds on this list. It is located near Lompoc and requires a more intentional drive to reach the coast. That remoteness is part of the appeal.
This is the campground to consider if you want a more unplugged beach experience. The setting is the main attraction: ocean views, beach walks, surf, coastal air, and a feeling of being away from the busier Santa Barbara corridor.
For RV travelers with a 30-foot rig, planning matters. Check the individual campsite dimensions before booking, and be prepared for a more remote stay. It is not the most convenient choice for exploring downtown Santa Barbara or Solvang, but it may be one of the most memorable choices if your goal is beach camping.

Decide whether you need hookups. Full hookups can make a longer stay much easier, but some of the most scenic coastal campgrounds may be dry camping only or have limited hookups.
Book early when reservations are available. Santa Barbara County is a popular destination, especially on weekends, holidays, and during summer.
Think about your itinerary before choosing a campground. If most of your plans are in Santa Barbara, staying near Buellton may add driving time. If your plans are focused on Solvang and wine country, an inland campground may make more sense.
Bring layers. Coastal Santa Barbara County can be cool, foggy, and windy, while inland areas such as Lake Cachuma and Buellton can be much warmer.
