At the western end, a footpath leads out to the headland at Friars Point. We walked to the rocky outlet of Friar’s Peak to sit on volcanic rocks overlooking the Bristol Channel. The slanted rocks made us think that perhaps an earthquake once upon a time shaped the geology in this area. Across the channel, we could see England and the Somerset area – an area we further explored during our UK travels.
Spending some quiet time sitting on the rocks and looking at the channel was nice. Once past the carnival atmosphere closer to the train stop, this became a stop offering peace and solitude.

Barry Island is home to various attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy. There are several arcades along the pier, which provide plenty of fun for everyone.
If you want something relaxing, explore the area’s beautiful gardens like Bute Park or The Knap Gardens. We enjoyed just sitting on the rocks overlooking the Bristol Channel during our visit to Barry Island – so relaxing!
You can also take a trip up to Barry Island Pleasure Park, which provides an array of exciting rides and attractions. From the Log Flume to the Galleon, there’s something for everyone here!
No trip to Barry Wales would be complete without a visit to Porthkerry Country Park. This stunning location offers beautiful coastal views, secluded beaches, and plenty of trails for woodland walks through its forests and meadows. It’s just a short drive or train ride from Barry Island.

We first stopped at the visitor center during our visit to get guidance on where to wander. “Well, it’s not a cultural town,” said the man at the desk. “You have to go to Cardiff for culture.” Still, we didn’t come for “culture” and found plenty to enjoy as we wandered about.
Yet Barry Island does offer cultural and historical sites that offer a glimpse into its past. The Barry War Museum is a must-visit, showcasing artifacts and stories from World War II. St. Baruc’s Chapel, though in ruins, holds historical significance dating back to the medieval period. The island’s heritage is also reflected in the old Barry Docks and the remnants of its industrial past. These sites provide a deeper understanding of Barry Island’s history and cultural heritage.
Outdoor Activities to Enjoy at Barry Island, Wales
Barry Island is a treasure trove of outdoor activities, perfect for visitors seeking adventure and natural beauty. Whitmore Bay, a sandy beach, is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and beach sports. Pukka in the Park (July) – A 5-day open-air theatre festival organized by Pukka Productions offers something for everyone. Set in Central Park, Barry, you can enjoy musicals, tribute bands and say hellos to mermaids and pirates.
GlastonBARRY (July) – An annual live music festival features some of the world’s best tribute acts and attracts up to 7000 visitors daily at the picturesque Romilly Park, Barry. The festival has two main stages: a bar and a food court. This event is limited to attendees over the age of 18.
The Barry Island 10K (August) – Enjoy the running festival amidst a feel-good atmosphere. Put on your running shoes and trek down fully closed roads as you pass seaside spots and South Wales landmarks, including Whitmore Bay and Watch House Bay. There are even races for the younger set, allowing aspiring athletes to enjoy an organized running event.

Barry Island Directions
By Bus
The bus network in Wales is extensive and efficient, with regular services available throughout the day. To get to Barry Island from Cardiff, take the number 2 bus from Westgate Street to Broad Street, then jump on a number 39 or 89 bus to Barry Island. The entire journey will take approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.
By Train
The Welsh Railways offer frequent services between Barry Island and Cardiff Central Station. The fastest route is via the South Wales Main Line, which will get you into Barry Island in about 40 minutes.
Our train ride from Cardiff was quite memorable, as our afternoon train was one of the most squeaky trains we’ve experienced. Nevertheless, it got us to Barry Island for hours of exploration.
By Car
If you have your vehicle, the journey from Cardiff to Barry Island should take around 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Take the M4 towards Swansea and exit onto the A48 until you eventually reach Broad Street roundabout. Then follow signs for Barry Island.

You’ll find 24 colorful beach huts on Barry Island. Located on the eastern promenade, the huts are a fun base for your day on the island. Small huts measure 2.5m x 1.8m while large huts measure 2.4m x 2.5m Both have electricity sockets and the the large huts also provide access to running water.

Barry Island is blessed with a mild climate year-round, making it an ideal holiday destination for any time of the year. Summers are usually quite warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from around 15°C to 25°C during that period. Winters are relatively short and mild, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C.
Rainfall is moderate all year round, with slightly more rain during winter. The island is also protected from strong winds by its coastal landscape, making it a pleasant and safe place to visit.
