Osterley House and Park

Was this property in the footsteps of Art’s dad, Bolesław Dobrucki, during WWII?  We researched, explored, and talked to docents to find the answer. Bolesław Dobrucki traveled as a young Polish volunteer training with the Royal Air Force in Britain.  We learned his time with the RAF may have included a stay at Osterley House.  So, on this day trip, our first stop is Osterley House and Park.

Once the residence of the 9th Earl of Jersey, his wife, Lady Jersey, had cared for a band of Polish boys from the RAF.  So we went to see if Osterley House might have been one of the residences where the lads were entertained.  The podcast touches on the parts of the property you can visit.  Listen to learn a few tips to make the most of your visit to Osterley House and Park.

Richmond Palace

Our second stop was Richmond Palace.  Lord Jersey once occupied this residence in the mid-1940s.  The interior is not open to the public at this stop for viewing.  However, we glimpse the exterior and learn about the centuries-old property and its many royal occupants.

Biographies about Virginia Cherrill (aka Lady Jersey) note Richmond Palace as a place where they entertained her band of adopted Polish sons.  Art’s dad was among these boys from the RAF school in Halton, England, in the 1940s.  As a result, our visit to London would be incomplete without a trip out to catch a glimpse of the gatehouse and the remaining structure of what once was Richmond Palace.

Virginia Cherrill

Who knew Hollywood would intersect the British military, royal culture, and a Polish refugee story in the heart of London during WWII?  Well, these seemingly disconnected topics indeed come together.  The Hollywood connection is via the actress Virginia Cherill, who would marry the 9th Earl of Jersey to become Lady Jersey.  Her story is interwoven into the properties we visit in this episode.  After her days on the silver screen in Hollywood, she was a prominent member of British Society.  In Hollywood, she is honored with a star on the legendary Walk of Fame.

Restaurant and Foodie Highlights

Our day exploring Polish history in the heart of London would be complete with a Polish dinner.  So, we found just the place for a tremendous Polish meal with fabulous variety.  We highlight Daquise Polish Restaurant in London. This was great dining Polish style in the heart of London.

Travel Resources

Are you planning a trip to the UK?  You’ll do well by consulting a book such as “DK Eyewitness Travel Guide Great Britain” for identifying specific attractions to include during our trip.  This book was helpful to us in identifying walking tours and museums, as well as providing days and times that specific places are open to visit.  Be sure to purchase a book similar to this one when planning a longer trip.
