Our choice – Bluetti Power Stations

We looked at a lot of models. In the end, we selected Bluetti for our power station. Bluetti offers a wide variety of portable solar power stations.

We wanted a minimum of 1500 watts and selected the Bluetti EB150 model.  It’s the Bluetti 1500-watt model available at the time of our purchase.

Another great choice from Bluetti, with even more power, is the AC200P.  This model is a 2000-watt solar generator. Another great choice is the Bluetti AC200MAX.

Both models have high-capacity lithium batteries.

Who is a portable solar power station for?

RV Travelers: If you travel in an RV, a portable solar power station is an excellent supplement to a traditional generator.

Camping: For campers, the power station can eliminate the stress of wondering if your devices will run out of juice. While not technically a generator, some people call this type of device a portable power generator for camping.

Home: At home, we experience the occasional power outages from our local electricity provider. So, having this unit available at the house helps us manage when our power is temporarily unavailable. We love having an extra power option like this during emergencies.

A portable solar power station has many uses. They come in handy when in the great outdoors and standard AC outlets are unavailable. If you want to use power tools such as a wired power drill, plug it into the solar power station’s outlet.

Our Bluetti EB150 is a rugged unit

Our Bluetti EB150 is rugged.  We appreciate the build quality.  It’s also hefty.  Just a tad smaller than a small carry-on suitcase, our unit weighs 35 pounds. Still, it’s easy enough to carry around the campground.  A handle on the top makes picking up and shifting to a new location convenient.

The materials of the EB150 feature a body made of metal, while the front and back panels are made of plastic. We selected the unit with blue-colored panels. An alternate version is available in black.

A fan on the unit’s backside helps to cool the battery when operating the power station.

Charging the Bluetti EB150

We typically charge our Bluetti EB150 at home by plugging it into an AC wall outlet. This connection can take close to 10 hours to charge the unit entirely.

Upgrading our Bluetti EB150 to green power

These units from Bluetti can be powered with traditional AC and portable solar panels.  So far, we’ve just relied on AC to charge the unit before our travels fully.  As we expect to do quite a bit more boondocking in the future, our next addition will be the Bluetti solar panels.

Bluetti offers portable solar panels rated at 120W, 200W, and 350W.

Adding 2 Bluetti solar panels makes it possible to charge the unit within 6 hours. How great is that? Clean energy from the sun to power your devices!

Lots of outlets to power your devices

You can quickly charge your favorite gadgets like cameras, smartphones, and other portable electronics.  In most situations, you find yourself without access to needed outlets for charging while traveling.

The display of our Bluetti EB150

The front side of our Bluetti EB150 has an LCD display. This provides several statistics – perhaps the remaining battery level is the most important.  The display also shows input power while charging and AC and DC output power.

What can you power with the Bluetti portable solar power stations?

Here are some examples of what you can power with two of Bluetti’s portable power stations

The power capacity of our Bluetti EB150 is 1000 watts. This allows the use of electric equipment rated at 1000 watts for about one hour. While there are two 1000W AC outlets (110V each), the combined power draw cannot exceed the 1000-watt threshold. If you attempt to power devices that exceed this limit, the unit will shut down to protect the battery.

How does the Bluetti EB150 perform?

We have spent week-long periods at a time in the great outdoors without access to AC power. Our Bluetti allows us not to miss a beat. Cameras, cell phones, and iPads are easily charged on our travel adventures, even in the middle of nowhere.

On such trips, we only partially depleted the unit, so we had power remaining at the end of our trip. We even used it to boost the batteries of our Airstream when we couldn’t plug in our fuel generator. How awesome is that?

FAQ

Can you charge and discharge the Bluetti EB150 at the same time?

Yes.  However, running the unit continuously may shorten the battery’s lifetime.

What is the recommended discharge rate for the Bluetti EB150?

The self-consumption time of the EB150 is meager – about 12mA/day.  So even if it isn’t recharged for one year, it will only self-consume a small amount of power. Still, recharging the unit every 3-6 months is recommended, even if it is not used during that time.

Does the Bluetti EB150 have current overload protection?

Yes, the Bluetti EB150 has current overload protection.

Bluetti EB150 summary

Here are a few key points that summarize the Bluetti EB150:

  • You get 1000 watts of power capacity. That means you can power equipment rated at 1000 watts or less.
  • The unit has a surge power of around 1000 watts. So, exceeding the 1000-watt threshold isn’t viable.
  • Battery capacity is 1500Wh. That translates to slightly less than one hour per 1500 watt – refer to the table above for realistic examples of how long to expect the unit to run based on the wattage of your devices.
  • Multiple connection options are available on the unit (AC outlets, DC, USB-A, USB-C)
  • 500 watts of solar panels can be attached to the unit via MPPT charging
  • Weight is listed at 35 pounds. We have no problem carrying this at the campground or home.

Conclusion

We’re delighted with our Bluetti EB150 Portable Power Station. It’s a constant companion with us and our Airstream on our RV and camping trips. We once had a boondocking situation where we drained our RV battery.  Access to a power station like this can be a lifesaver when Plan A fails.  Our most extended consecutive boondocking trip since bringing the Bluetti EB150 with us has been five days.  And we didn’t come close to running out of capacity.
