Kuhl provided a complimentary pair of pants for review, but did not provide compensation or administer control over the content of this post. All opinions are my own.

Bottom line: The KUHL Renegade Pant is one of my favorite men’s travel pants because it works for hiking, road trips, city exploring, and casual dinners. It is best for travelers who want durable, water-resistant, quick-drying pants with lots of secure pockets. It may not be the best choice for very hot, humid destinations or travelers who prefer an ultralight minimalist pant.

Kuhl Renegade Pant Review Introduction

Many years ago, I had no idea hiking pants were a thing. On my earliest hikes, I would throw on a pair of jeans and head out.  Then one day, I signed up to walk the 67-mile Santa Monica Backbone Trail and decided to get myself adequately outfitted. Among the items I purchased at REI were a couple of proper hiking pants (which happened to be KUHL brand).  Wow, what a difference this change made – and it’s been hiking pants for me when doing outdoor activities ever since.

When searching for the perfect hiking and travel pants, we look for comfortable pants that are form-fitting ones and feature adjustable lengths. Additionally, many pockets are handy, so you can easily store items like your phone or wallet.

Enter Kuhl’s Renegade Pants for men – a prime example of all we look for in multi-purpose pants. Let’s look closer at what makes these pants stand out from the competition and why they might be what you want on your next outdoor adventure or traveling excursion.

How I Tested the KUHL Renegade Pants

I tested the KUHL Renegade Pants as part of my normal travel and hiking routine. My travel style usually combines outdoor exploring, road trips, city walking, photography, filming for our travel vlog, museums, casual restaurants, and occasional one-bag packing.

For this review, I evaluated the pants based on comfort, pocket usefulness, travel versatility, ease of movement, weather resistance, packability, wrinkle resistance, and ease of transitioning from trail use to casual travel settings.

I also compared the Renegade Pants with other KUHL pants I own, as well as hiking pants from other brands I have used on trails and during national park trips.

Sizing Notes From My Experience

I ordered a size 32-30. Based on my experience, the fit was true to size. The pants worked especially well for a variety of activities, including hiking and travel days. The rise felt comfortable.

Worn on: Local Southern California hikes, road trips, RV travel experiences, National Park visits, and as a travel day pant in Europe.

Weather tested: I’ve worn it mostly in the weather conditions I experience in Southern California, as well as western National Parks. The temperature range I’ve worn the pants in has typically been between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the upper 90s, encompassing hot days, cool mornings, light mist, and windy desert conditions.

Comfort test: Long hikes, long car rides, long walks, and trail use.

Comfort and Mobility

I was surprised and pleased at how lightweight and comfortable the Renegade pants felt.  These are my fourth pair of pants from KUHL, and they have moved into first place as my favorite from KUHL.

These pants are super comfortable and great for hiking or city exploring. KUHL Renegade pants deliver a lightweight, stretchable design that feels and fits great. The feel of the material is soft and it moves easily while walking or during extended motions, as on a hiking trail.

KUHL provides three different fit options: Klassik, Tapered Chino, and Tapered.

The biggest highlight for me, hands down, is the many pockets.  Yes, there are a total of eight, and that comes in very handy. During travel or hiking, I always have several items, including wallet, cellphone, and accessories for filming our travel VLOG, The Places Where We Go. So, many pockets are paramount, and KUHL Renegade pants deliver in a big way.

Breathability

KUHL uses Duraflex fabric for its Renegade pants. This 180 grams per-square-meter fabric is made from 95% Nylon and 5% Spandex, providing two-way stretch.

In addition to being highly breathable, Duraflex fabric resists abrasion and dries quickly.

I’ve had these on during our unusually cold California winter, and they felt wonderful.  A light base layer will add extra warmth in even colder winter weather, as we experienced recently near Flagstaff, Arizona, while still enjoying the stretch and flexibility the Renegade pants provide.

Adaptability

Our travel style is very DIY, with a lot of movement. That means we pack tightly – sometimes using only a single backpack for each of us.  I rely on clothes that roll up easily in packing cubes and look good and wrinkle-free when unrolled.  The Renegade pants fit the bill.

A typical travel itinerary includes hiking, museums, and, hopefully, a nice evening dinner.  Pants like these are wonderful, stylish, and functional, as I can wear them for any of these travel outings.

The pants’ excellent stretch makes them a decent choice for the hiking trail. Add a button-up shirt, and I’m appropriately dressed to go to the art museum, dinner, or even a cathedral.  The Renegade pants offer great versatility for a variety of travel situations.

I appreciated the fabric’s quality and how sharp these KUHL pants look. They are a great mix of comfort and thoughtful design, and they are a new part of my travel attire.

Sun Protection and Weather Resistance

In the California sun, I make a point of wearing clothes with good UV protection. The KUHL Renegade pants provide added safety outdoors with UPF 50+ protection against harmful UV rays.

KUHL Renegade pants also offer water resistance. The fabric has a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish for protection in wet conditions like light rain.

Dry Time

An essential quality I look for in hiking clothes is good wicking ability.  Your body produces a lot of moisture out on the trail, and these pants come to the rescue by wicking moisture away from your skin during more strenuous walking.

These pants have a softshell quick-dry design.  This is handy during our extended travels when we pack minimal clothes and may need to rinse clothing in the evening before using the next day. These pants deliver impressive drying performance thanks to the DURALUX fabric, which KUHL states “dries faster than standard nylon.”

Colors

Kuhl offers a range of 7 colors for the Kuhl Renegade Pants.  Color options include:

  • Teak
  • Koal
  • Nocturnal Blue
  • Khaki
  • Buckskin Khaki
  • Burnt Olive
  • Pewter

I chose Koal for my Renegades. With so many color options on this pants model, consider several for your closet.

Pockets

My favorite aspect of KUHL Renegade Pants is the pockets – all eight of them!

  • Two front pockets
  • Two back pockets with hook-and-loop closure
  • Two thigh pockets with zippers
  • One pocket for a smartphone
  • One 3D wallet/phone pocket

Seven of the pockets have mesh lining, providing good ventilation. The non-mesh pocket is the 3D wallet/phone pocket.

While exploring, I’ve kept my wallet, travel VLOG accessories, and cell phone in the Renegade pockets. I appreciate the abundance of pockets. Thanks, KUHL!

Summary

I own several versions of KUHL pants and a few hiking pants from other manufacturers.  No question: when I hit the hiking trail, the brand I wear is KUHL.  They’ve been with me on the entire Backbone Trail of the Santa Monica Mountains to epic hikes in Glacier and Zion National Parks.

After experiencing the Renegade pants, these are now my first choice for travel, especially on trips that combine hiking and urban adventures.
